Vodka is a grain spirits, pure, almost exclusively unaged and unseasoned spirits with little or no flavouring at all. If the spirits are seasoned, it’s called schnapps, aquavit or snaps.

Vodka originate from north-eastern Europe and it is disputed whether the beverage comes from Russia or Poland. The climate was too cold for cultivating wine and they began fermenting and distilling other produce they could use – vegetables, potatoes and different kinds of grain, usually rye, which withstands the cold well. The food in the Nordic region and Scandinavia with its salted and smoked dishes is well suited to vodka and made it a table drink in many countries. Today, vodka is mainly drunk straight with ice or used as a cocktail ingredient.
